Optic fiber sensors

Image
Optical temperature sensors are temperature sensors that are based on optical technology – in most cases, on fiber optics. There are alternative techniques, in particular electronic temperature sensing. However, optical temperature sensors can offer important advantages such as:  High-voltage isolation Electromagnetic  and radiation immune Inherently intrinsically safe/ Intrinsically non-explosive Insensitive to lightning strikes Cryogenic and high temperature tolerant Simple, safe handling of the optical cable High resistance to dynamic fatigue Subsequent repair and mounting Perfect load transfer No corrosion or drift Installation of numerous sensors on the same line Fiber Optics Temperature Measurement System: Figure 1: Components of a typical optical temperature measurement system The general structure of an optical fiber temperature measurement system is shown in the above figure 1 which consists mainly of four components that are  the source,  fiber optic,...

Temperature measurement

Image
Temperature measurement Temperature measurement is carried out in the industry to know the temperature of the environment such as the temperature of the liquid in the furnace or winding of an electrical machine, and so on.  Temperature is defined as a measure of the velocity of fluid particles and is a property that determines the degree of hotness or coldness or the level of heat intensity of a body. The temperature measured at absolute zero is called absolute temperature. Absolute temperature can be obtained as Absolute temperature (in Kelvin) = Thermometer reading (in degree Celsius) + 273  The various instruments which are used for measuring temperature are Thermometers Bimetallic strips Electrical resistance thermometers (RTD) Thermocouple Thermistor Thermopile and Pyrometers which can either be total radiation pyrometer or optical pyrometer Thermometers So how do we physically measure temperature? We all know that we can measure temperature...
